2012 Wabash Valley District Dinner

All Scouters and families are invited to the first Wabash Valley District Dinner on May 3, 2012. The Dinner will be held at St. Andrew UMC, 4703 N 50 W, West Lafayette. Fellowship will begin at 6:30 with dinner following at 7:00. Dinner will be $10.00 per person. Please RSVP by May 1st. The highlight of the dinner will be the awarding of several Unit and District awards. There will also be the highlights of the 2011-2012 program year.

Wabash Valley Fishing Derby

The 2012 Fishing Derby will be held on June 9, 2012 at Subaru of Indiana Automotive. The Derby will take place at the lake that is just beyond the SIA Day Care Center. This is a free program for new and returning Cub Scouts. There is no need for a fishing license and it is all catch and release. There will be a limited number of poles available to use or bring your own. The bait will be provided as will lunch (not the same meals for fish and boys).

Day Camp Help Needed

The Cary Day Camp will be held July 30-August 3 at Cary Camp. The camp is run by volunteers and needs your help. In addition to the walkers provided by each Pack to cover their Cub Scouts and Webelos, the camp also needs adults and Boy Scouts to help run the different areas of camp. Most of the areas are covered by at least one adult, but it is always good to have a back up. There is a need for help in the kitchen to coordinate the staff lunches. Any registered Cub Scout leader, parent who is willing to register, and older Boy Scouts are

welcome and encouraged to lend a hand at Day Camp. If you can only give a day or two, there is still a place for you at camp. Leaders serving on staff do not count in the Pack’s ratio of 1 leader for every 6 Cub Scouts.

Arbor Day Good Turn

Tree Lafayette has once again asked for our participation in their annual tree planting. Arbor Tree planting for 2012 is scheduled for May 5 at 9:00 a.m. on near Lafayette Jefferson High School. We plan to plant 60 trees.

2012-2013 Program Planning Kickoff

Packs should be planning their monthly themes, major activities (i.e. recruiting, Blue and Gold Banquet, Popcorn Sales, District and Council activities, Pinewood Derby, and Friends of Scouting), and then put a Pack budget together to fund your program. Troops should also come up with monthly themes based on the Troop Program Resources and input from the Scouts. This planning should happen before the start of school in the fall so your Unit can hit the road running into a planned Fall program of meetings and activities.

There will be a Program Planning Kickoff at Roundtable on May 10 at Cary Camp to help with planning your Fall Program. Most of the information you will need to create a fun and meaningful program will be available. You will have the information you need to create a realistic budget for your 2012-2013 program. Veteran Scouters will be on hand to help you through the process.

Nominations for District Awards

If you know of a leader who has stood out above the crowd over the last year, nominate them for one or more of the district awards that will be presented at the District Dinner.  The awards include the Outstanding Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing Leaders, Outstanding Commissioner, Hall of Fame, or a Golden Spark Plug from your Unit.

Each year the Wabash Valley District recognizes the top leader in each area of Scouting with the outstanding Leader Awards.  Leaders need to be active in their Unit or at the District Level for each Program.  The Hall of Fame is for leaders who have made a long term impact on Scouting in our area.  Each Pack, Troop and Crew can also present one of their own with the Golden Sparkplug award to one of their leaders or parents who has put a spark in their program.  One Golden Sparkplug may be given for every 30 boys registered in their unit.

The highest award that can be given by the any District is the District Award of Merit.  These nominees have been the true leaders in Scouting, their church, and their communities.  The Wabash Valley District will be able to present three District Awards of Merit in 2012.

Roundtable

If you want to stay informed on District activities and learn new information that can help build your program, you or another leader from your Unit needs to be at Roundtable each month. The roundtable begins with a general meeting at 7:00 and then will split into Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturer leader sections.  The Order of the Arrow will also hold their Chapter meeting at Cary Camp that night.

Friends of Scouting

Most Packs have scheduled their presentations for Family Friends of Scouting.  If you have not scheduled your presentation, please get the date, time and location to Frank Cederquist 765-589-8984, or fcederquist@aol.com, as soon as possible.

Family Friends of Scouting

If you have not signed up for your annual Friends of Scouting presentation, please contact Frank Cederquist. We would like to hold all of the presentations before the end of March, so we can focus on program and membership for the rest of the year. Every dollar counts, and every family should be given the opportunity to decide to contribute through a family presentation.

Cub Scout and Boy Scout Roundtable

Roundtables are held on the second Thursday of each month at Cary Camp beginning with a general session at 7:00 pm.  After the general session leaders will go to either the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, or Venturing sessions.  Scoutmasters are encouraged to bring their Order of the Arrow member with them to Roundtable for the monthly Chapter Meeting.  The October Roundtable will have time dedicated to Charter Renewal packet distribution and general instructions.
