Spring Cub Scout Recruitment

The Peshewa District is working with local packs and elementary schools to invite new boys to the Cub Scout program during the spring and summer.   Did you know that boys currently in kindergarten can register as a Cub Scout on June 1st?!  By recruiting families into Scoutint during the spring and summer, the boy (and his parents) will have an opportunity to enjoy the Scouting program before the rush of the start of the school year.  Our first event to help with this spring recruitment will be Cub Fun Day on April 14th.

Have Your Den Leaders In Place

Cub Scout Packs need to know who their Den Leaders are going to be BEFORE roundups in August! Use the summer to recruit the best person. A good place to recruit them is at the planning meeting for your pack. A willing volunteer is not always the best person for the job; identify the parent you want, and then get that person say "yes." Let them know about the support in place to help them succeed. Send them to the summer’s end training for their positions. Have them view Fast Start and Youth Protection Training online right away. Once you have your plan for the year and your leadership in place everything else should go smoothly!

District Award Nominations / District Dinner

Please save the date of Monday, May 9th on your calendars.  We will be having our Peshewa District Diner that evening at 7:00 PM at the Eastern Woodland Carver's Hall in Converse.  (Address:  101 S. Jefferson St., Converse IN)  The cost is $10.00 per person before April 25th, and $15.00 per person after that date.  The dinner will be provided for us by the ladies of the Eastern Woodlandcarvers Hall.  This dinner is an opportunity to celebrate our district's successes over the past year, honor our district committee members, who make our district run smoothly, and honor some of our great volunteer leaders who deserve the recognition.

In order to make this event special we need your help.  Please nominate your unit leaders and Eagle Scouts for the following awards:  Roy McClain (Outstanding Scout Leader), Wilbur Hudson Award (Outstanding Eagle Scout), or the District Award of Merit (Outstanding District Volunteer).  Good work deserves to be recognized; show your appreciation by nominating someone!  Nominations are due to the Scout Service Center by April 1st.

Keep Your Pack Active During the Summer

During the summer it is sometimes hard for Cub Scout leaders to have regular meetings. Between vacations and baseball practices it may seem impossible. However, if you want to keep your Scouts more than one year, having a couple of fun activities may mean the difference between keeping them one year and losing them the next. Here are some ideas for short one day things that you can do as a Pack.

Have a Pack family picnic. This is a great one day thing that most families can get behind. Find a park and plan a couple of activities (Water gun fight, cornhole tournament, water balloon toss, etc.). Have each family bring some sort of dish and have everyone bring their own drinks. It’s a nice way for families to spend time together while also getting the Pack doing something.

If you more ambitious you may try to have a Pack Campout. Find a good backyard or another camping site. Make sure that one of your leaders is BALOO trained. Invite your families, again have some activities planned. Maybe go on a hike. Cub Scout books in the Scout store have many ideas for what these could be. Enjoy the roasting marshmallows and have some skits by the campfire.

Another idea is doing a Day Trip somewhere fun. This might be as simple as a trip as a Pack to a Minor League baseball team, the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis, or maybe an amusement park. Make it something fun and interesting that they don’t get to visit that often.

Have your pack try for the Summer Time Pack Award. The details are available online, but it involves doing 3 activities during June, July, and August and getting 50% of your den’s Scouts to attend. The boys earn some pretty cool pins and the Pack earns a ribbon for its flag. You also get the benefit of your Scout’s being active and ready for Cub Scouts to start in the Fall.

Schedule Your Friends of Scouting Presentation

this Month

Friends of Scouting presentations are opportunities for families to hear about the Sagamore Council, Peshewa District and possibly support the local Boy Scouts of America through a tax-deductible contribution (which may be made payable throughout 2012.)

Each presentation, and contribution to the Peshewa District and Sagamore Council, allows the local Boy Scouts of America to operate in a manner that provides your Scout with top-quality programming!  To schedule a Friends of Scouting presentation, please contact Matt Bender, District Director, at 765-452-8253 or email matt.bender@scouting.org.

How Can My Troop, Pack or Crew Grow?

Be sure your Pack, Troop or Crew is on top of these things:

1. Announce your Troop, Pack or Crew's program kickoff in the school

    newsletter and church bulletin.

2.  Hang posters in the school hallways or lunchroom.

3.  Have your Scouts wear their uniforms to school on meeting days.

4.  Have your Scouts "bring a friend to Scouts" and earn the Recruiter

     Strip.
